These powerful Puglians are made by brothers Marcello and Massimiliano, the fourth generation of the Apolonio family to make wines on their estate in Monteroni di Lecce on the gentle slopes of sun baked southern Italy. The brothers make wines that stylistically strike a balance between the traditional and modern using local varieties such as Primitivo and Negroamaro alongside more obscure local specialities such as Malvasia Nera di Lecce and di Brindisi. In addition to this they also use small proportions of Montepulciano and Sangiovese to add finesse, elegance and complexity to the traditional ‘full throttle’ style of the region. Each wine in the range has its own distinct character but all of them share a family resemblance of up front fruit, great structure and a hugely appealing, almost new world like approachability right from the moment of pulling the long driven cork.
As we rush headlong in to what looks like a cracking barbeque summer these wines will really come in to their own, giving a splendid mixture of bold, sunny fruit and richness with more than enough structure and acidity to match the heartiest of char grilled meals.
